First Microwave Ablation of Benign Thyroid Nodules
This week, Helsingborg Hospital became the first hospital in Sweden to perform microwave
ablation (MWA) of benign thyroid nodules. The initiative was led by Dr. Artturi Petäjä, and the procedures were carried out using the MaxBlate Microwave Ablation System with the Thytip® 18G microwave antenna.
Dr. Petäjä and his team successfully completed four microwave ablation procedures. According to the clinical team, all procedures went smoothly and the day exceeded initial expectations.
The successful treatments represent an important step in thyroid care, and highlight the potential of microwave ablation as a minimally invasive treatment option for selected patients with benign thyroid nodules.
Preparing for a New Treatment Approach
Introducing a new treatment approach into clinical practice requires planning, training, and collaboration. In the period leading up to the first patient treatments, Mermaid Medical worked closely with Helsingborg Hospital to prepare for the implementation of microwave ablation using the MaxBlate system.
The preparation included product training, hands-on phantom practice, and close collaboration with physicians and nurses from the ENT department. This ensured that the entire clinical team felt confident and well prepared for the first clinical cases.
