Rethinking Early PE Protection
The Angel® Catheter is an integrated device that combines an inferior vena cava (IVC) filter with a triple-lumen central venous catheter. It provides early prophylactic pulmonary embolism (PE) protection while supporting standard central venous therapy in critically ill patients - without requiring a separate IVC filter placement procedure. The filter is removed together with the catheter, helping reduce the need for additional interventions.
Clinical Context & Patient Profiles
Critically ill patients are at increased risk of pulmonary embolism, particularly during periods of immobilisation and intensive care.
In this setting, pharmacological prophylaxis may be delayed, limited, or contraindicated.
The Angel® Catheter is designed to provide immediate PE protection during this high‑risk, frequently untreated window - as part of routine central venous access.
Placement
The Angel® Catheter is placed using standard central venous catheter insertion technique.
Once positioned, the integrated IVC filter is deployed in the inferior vena cava, where it is designed to capture embolising thrombi while allowing blood flow to continue.
Retrieval
When central venous access is no longer required, the catheter is removed using standard clinical practice, and the filter is withdrawn simultaneously. This integrated retrieval process eliminates the need for a separate filter removal procedure, helping reduce additional interventions.
CE Mark & FDA Clearance
The Angel® Catheter is the first and only inferior vena cava (IVC) filter to receive both FDA clearance and CE marking with an indication for prophylactic use.
It is indicated for critically ill patients requiring central venous access who are at risk of pulmonary embolism, and for whom traditional prophylactic options may be limited or contraindicated.
